Education for Every Student
High-quality schools improve our communities and the futures of our children. Increased resources keep students safe and thriving. When our children miss these opportunities, we all suffer. As an individual proudly shaped by Los Angeles public schools and student support services, I know this firsthand.
As Director of County and Regional Affairs, I worked extensively with the Los Angeles Unified School District to establish shared priorities and initiatives, including student safety and homelessness. As State Senator, I’ll continue to protect public education to provide students the resources they deserve.
In the State Senate, I will champion:
Supporting K-12 students by prioritizing inclusivity and fairness for all. This places the guarantee of necessary resources at a minimum, and strives to dismantle inequities against students of color and low-income families. We must achieve community schools with wrap around services throughout our entire state, starting with our most left-behind communities.
Supporting K-12 teachers and staff by ensuring fair pay and strengthening recruitment and retention programs. These efforts also strive to dismantle inequities against faculty of color and first-generation educators.
Increasing K-12 funding by closing corporate property tax loopholes and opposing the privatization and outsourcing of student and staff support services. This will stabilize funding and hold programs accountable to the communities they serve. Prop 98 is the floor, but definitely not the limit.
Expanding the accessibility of higher education by supplementing financial aid, tuition relief, and other student support services. This includes mentorship, academic support, and pathway programs at the K-12 levels. We must push towards debt free and ultimately tuition free public college so education is accessible to all.
Every student deserves the tools, mentorship, and confidence to succeed. These initiatives work toward just that.
